Biofuel: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Biofuel?

The term “biofuel” describes any fuel containing a biodegradable component obtained from a recycled source such as vegetable oil or animal fat. For oil heat, the proper term is BioHeat™; for diesel fuel, the proper term is BioDiesel. Once blended with distillate product, other than the respective sulfur levels of each, both are essentially the same product (as is true with heating oil and diesel fuel). The chemical name for Biofuel is methyl-ester.
Biofuel bi-o-fu-el (noun) is fuel made from biological materials: a renewable fuel that is derived from biological matter, e.g. biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas and methane. Biodiesel
Biofuel refers to fuels made from biomass and primarily used for motive, thermal and power generation, with quality specifications in accordance with the Philippine National Standards (PNS).
Biofuel can be broadly defined as solid, liquid or gas fuel derived from recently dead biological material and is distinguished from fossil fuels which are derived from long dead biological material. In theory biofuels can be made from any biological source. However, we stick (at present) to plant (vegitable oil) and timber (sawdust and chips).
Biofuel is essentially slightly modified used cooking oil. It can be used in any standard diesel engine and can be obtained from many restaurants and establishments for little or no cost. It has virutally no emissions and is safe to use. For more information on biofuel, please click on our “Check Out Biodiesel!” link on the left side of our page.

What is second-generation biofuel production?

Second-generation biofuel production convert non-food stuffs like woodchips, grasses, straw and other plant-waste into biofuels. These processes require enhanced pre-treatment of the biomass to breakdown the ligno-cellulosic structure before converting it to biofuel.

What is biofuel, biodiesel, veggie oil, bioethanol?

Fossil fuels like petrol, diesel and LPG are refined from plants that died millions of years ago. Biofuels like biodiesel and bioethanol are made from parts of living plants. Additionally vegetable oil can be used unrefined in suitably modified cars.

What feedstocks will be used to make the new biofuel?

The first DuPont-BP biobutanol plant in the UK will use sugar beet as the feedstock. Future biobutanol plants, however, could use any locally grown crops, including corn, wheat, sugar cane, and, in the future biomass/cellulosic feedstocks from fast growing “energy crops” such as grasses, or “agricultural byproducts” such as straw and corn stalks.

What are the advantages of biofuel for electricity generation?

Biofuels (ethanol and biodiesel) are a source of FIRM renewable energy that will help us reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and can help us meet our goal of 10% renewable energy for electricity by 2010 and 20% by 2020.

What emissions are given out by the burning BioFuel?

Carbon Dioxide and steam are the only emissions from the burning BioFuel - ventilation is essential when using the glass BioFires, BioFireplaces or the fireplace Conversions as the open flame burns oxygen, either by a slightly open window or forced ventilation.

What are the biofuel targets in Europe and the USA?

The targets are: 5% biofuel use by 2010 and 10% by 2020 in Europe, and 36 billion gallons of biofuel use annually by 2022 in the USA, of which 21 billion gallons must be from second generation technologies. However, these targets are subject to revision, and the Gallagher review, for example, recommends a slower increase in biofuel targets in Europe than is currently planned.
