Eye Candy: Frequently Asked Questions

Why the band is named “No Eye Candy”?

To cut a long story short, the music you hear represents what we are, with no sugar coating. And yes, the name was picked before Cynthia and Wieke joined the band. If you don’t believe me, check out their lovely photos . Click here to read more about the band.

How can I get an eye-candy theme (icons instead of -->)?

What is your policy regarding the inclusion of "Eye-Candy" with the simulation?

We won't make eye-candies for the sake of it. We will make eye-candies only to support specific aspects of the simulation that make sense for the simulation and only if this does not cost any significant frame rate

How can I use eye-candy from X.org (shadows, translucency)?

(As told by Johannes Winkelmann on the mailing list) [...]The drop shadow and translucency effects just work when enabling the Composite extension in xorg.conf and: starting xcompmgr -c for shadows running the transset tool for the translucency It is unbearably slow on my 1.4 GHz P4 though; with shadows enabled, it takes about 3 seconds for an aterm window to be redrawn at the new position when moving it. I think it depends on whether you're using an accelerated X driver or not. ...

But you like 7 of 9. Admit it, it's because she's eye candy, right?

I've said many times (despite jokes I might have made) that I would have preferred she spent some time in the Borg suit. The transition to catsuit undermined her character, and the character is what I really find fascinating - the combination victim/victimizer.

I don't like eye candy, I like things simple, lightweight and fast. Why should I be interested in Vision?

Because of the open, modifiable and dynamic middleware, people are able to override and replace any module with one of their own which might be more to their liking. This means that even though a program might have been created with one version of a certain construct there is nothing stopping you from replacing it with another version on your whim (even if the program is closed source).

Question: is there any significance to the capital cities on the map, or are they just eye candy?

As far as i can tell the only purpose Capitals are to provide a sense of emotional loss when they are captured (they don't serve any game purpose)

OK, is the eye candy gonna be good?

We've got some of the best talent out there, and its not because we're outsourcing to India or Eastern Europe. Its because we drugged them, stuffed them in a sack and made them sign a contract pledging allegiance to the TOTAL REALISM empire..I mean community. So yes, we will give you the best hot looking princess portraits out there, and if its your thing, we have nice looking princes too. Most important of all, the skins of the units. If you've seen what Madtao can do, you know you're in safe hands with MTR. ...

I want to see all possible Celestia eye candy. What kind of graphics card should I get?

The short answer is the following: Any graphics card with at least 128MB of memory and support for OpenGL 2.0 pixel shaders will be able to show everything that Celestia is visually capable of. Look for a graphics card that advertises either support for Direct3D shader model 2.0 or higher. Almost all graphics cards being sold today meet this requirement, albeit with varying degrees of performance. High-end NVIDIA and ATI cards will provide the best experience in Celestia. ...
