What is a blood clot and why are they so dangerous?
When a blood clot (a clump of blood) forms in a vein, it causes inflammation. If an internal blood clot breaks loose and travels through the circulatory system, it may become lodged in an important blood vessel and block the flow of blood to vital organs. The result may be a heart attack, stroke, disabling injury in the limbs or pulmonary embolism.

What are the symptoms of a blood clot?
The symptoms of a blood clot (thrombotic episode) relate to where the blood clot is located, the size of the clot, and whether the clot breaks off and travels to another part of the body. For example, a blood clot in the lungs is known as a pulmonary embolus; a clot found deep in a leg is called deep vein thrombosis; in the brain, it’s called a stroke. Some of the symptoms of a pulmonary embolus include chest pain, shortness of breath and coughing up blood. ...

Blood clots (or phlebitis) can present as red tender lines on the legs or they can develop silently and grow extensively in the deep veins of the leg before being discovered. They are suspected by the physician when there is swelling or pain in just one leg that is not explainable by any other cause such as an injury or other event. The diagnosis requires an ultrasound examination for positive identification. This should be done for any extremity in which unexplainable symptoms of swelling or pain occurs. ...

Why are compression stockings prescribed after a blood clot (DVT) in the leg?
Knee length gradient compression stockings are often prescribed for a patient who has sustained a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood clot in the leg. The stockings are helpful in: 1. Controlling the swelling in the leg that occurs with DVT, and 2. To help prevent the development of post-thrombotic syndrome that may occur several months after the DVT. What causes a Deep Vein Thrombosis or Pulmonary Embolism blood clot?
There are many known causes of clot formation. Prolonged bed rest or inactivity, such as a long plane ride, can cause reduced circulation in the legs, which provides the opportunity for clot formation. Major surgical procedures or physical trauma can also increase the risk. Blood has several clotting factors, and an imbalance may lead to increased clot formation. There are genetic disorders known to contribute to clot formation. ...

Can I get a blood clot from injection therapy (sclerotherapy)?
Blood clots do occur in the superficial varicosities being treated by injection therapy. They occur when the vein is shut down during injection therapy, but they do not impose any health risks and resolve as the injected vein is absorbed by the body. These superficial blood clots should not be confused with much more dangerous blood clots which can occur for other reasons in the deeper veins in the legs.

What is a blood clot (also called DVT or Deep vein thrombosis) and is it preventable?
Undesired blood clotting in veins, especially of the calf and pelvis is a big deal and very dangerous. It can break off, go to your lungs, and cause death. It is not completely preventable, but preventive measures will be taken, including: early and frequent ambulation, blood thinners, pulsatile "squeeze" stockings (SCD's), short OR times, and close vigilance. Fortunately, our DVT rate is very low. We take all precautions.

Why do I need to hand mix whole blood tubes and separate sera from the clot?
The EDTA or heparin in whole blood tubes does not automatically blend with the blood, so unmixed samples will still clot. When shipped during the winter or packed in ice, clots in serum tubes will hemolyze, altering test results.

Why does the blood clot if it has been collected in a vacutainer containing a preservative to prevent clotting?
The blood should be inverted several times to mix the preservative and blood.

How long does it take for red blood cells to clot, so serum can be pipetted?
There is some variation from cow to cow, but usually 1cc of blood will clot in 20 to 30 minutes. Larger columns of blood will require longer times to clot. Clotting is speeded up at the beginning by using a wooden applicator stick or toothpick to rim the sides of the syringe barrel or tube holding the blood. TEST PERFORMANCE

Am I at risk for development of blood clot while flying and how can I prevent them?
Passengers who fly long distance are at risk of developing small clots in their legs. In a recent study researchers detected small leg vein clots in 12 out of 100 passengers flying long distance. All these clots were small and in most passengers dissolved without treatment. We still do not know how many passengers will go on to get a larger clot, either affecting the leg on a long term basis, or traveling to the lung. ...

Next week I am flying to Australia. Should I be taking aspirin to prevent Economy Class Syndrome, that is, a blood clot in my leg or lung?
I think Economy Class Syndrome really refers to the envy that such passengers feel as they walk past the First Class section on the way to their less than spacious seats. But seriously, the zillions of people out there who take an aspirin a day are taking it to prevent a heart attack or a stroke, both of which occur from a blockage of an artery. There is no evidence that aspirin reduces the risk of developing a clot in the vein, which is what this syndrome is all about. ...

Isn't such a powerful anticlotting therapy dangerous? Couldn't you actually cause a blood clot to break loose?
Gordon: No, we have never lost anybody from a blood clot breaking loose. Yet, we don't have anybody who takes EDTA on a regular basis bleed to death when they have an auto accident or cut themselves shaving, either. So I've got the best of all worlds. I don't have to bring you in for blood tests every week; and I don't have to keep your blood so thin that it's dangerous, like physicians who prescribe Coumadin do. ...

I am taking warfarin (brand name Coumadin) for a blood clot in my leg (DVT). Will the pain in my leg ever go away?
Henry I. Bussey, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAHA February, 2006 Typically, there may be a fair amount of pain and swelling when a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) develops. This pain is partly due to swelling in the vein in the leg with the blood clot. With appropriate therapy, however, the inflammation - and therefore the pain - usually resolves significantly within a few days. ...
