The simple answer is “NO” it is not type of cancer. There is no connection between diverticular disease and colorectal cancer. Diverticular disease itself is a non-cancerous condition and if you have diverticulosis then it will never turn into a bowel cancer. Some difficulty may arise as the symptoms of a bowel cancer and diverticular disease are often similar. It should also be remembered that a cancer may develop independently in someone that has already got diverticular disease. ...

What is cancer?
The way we answer ‘what is cancer’ depends on the age group but we stress that ‘cancer’, although we use just one word, is not one illness but many. There are actually over 200 different types of cancer, and you can get cancer in any part of the body. We often explain that the human body is made up of tiny building blocks called cells. When someone has cancer, something goes wrong with particular cells. ...

A person's body is made up of millions of cells. Some of these cells begin to grow in an abnormal or out of control way. Since they grow from our bodies they are not always recognized as foreign and escape detection by our bodies defense systems. As they grow out of control they can interfere with the normal function of our regular cells and make it very difficult for them to perform vital functions.

Is Cancer Curable ?
Yes ! Most of the solid tumours (eg: Cancer Breast), if detected in early stages, are curable by combined modality of treatment, namely surgery, radiation and chemotheraphy. Few cancers, even in advanced stages with distant metastasis, are curable; for example:
Testicular cancer. Choriocarcinoma
Ewing's sarcoma (Childhood bone tumour)
Rhabdomyosarcoma (Muscle tumour)
Haematological cancers like acute lymphatic leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease are also curable. -Dr.V.Vedamoorthy, Consultant Oncologist.

More than 80% of cancers today are completely curable if treated early. At times, however, cures have been obtained after the cancers have been present for a long time. The type of cancer and stage of cancer have an important bearing on its curability.

Is cancer genetic?
An individual's ability to resist cancer-causing substances in the environment undoubtedly includes a genetic component. For many cancers, inherited patterns are occasionally seen; in some instances the patterns are pronounced. At present, however, the ability to identify the genetic component of cancer risk is limited. As genetic knowledge advances, genetic studies will begin to have greater relevance for cancer screening and prevention.

Is cancer increasing ?
According to some, the number of new cancer cases diagnosed each year, per thousand of our population, is slowly increasing. Some say that it may be because of increased life spans and better diagnostic facilities.

Is cancer hereditary?
In the strict sense of the word cancer is not a hereditary disease as you will not definitely get cancer if one or more of your parents have had the disease. You can however inherit a tendency to get a particular cancer, but even if this inheritance occurs it will not definitely result in that cancer actually developing. Research into the genetic causes of cancer is ongoing. More information on this area is available from Cancer Research UK.
Source: www.qub.ac.uk
There are probably inherited tendencies that may lead to cancers of different types. The presence of cancer in one or both parents should be a cause for greater alertness in looking for and recognizing suspicious symptoms in the individual. Cancer however is not inherited except for one type of eye cancer known as Retinoblastoma.
Source: www.indiancancersociety.org
Not all cancers are hereditary. It is estimated that only 5-10% of all cancers are considered to be inherited. That is, individuals within a family may inherit a predisposition to develop a certain type of cancer. This inherited factor is called a gene. Inheriting an altered (or mutated) gene is what may predispose a person to develop a certain type of cancer.

Certain cancers are seen to occur in families. This does not mean that the disease has been transmitted from parent to children through genetic material. The same life style usually run in families and this could as well be the reason.Scientists believe that if there is a hereditary component, its effect is indeed very little.

Is there a cure for cancer?
Today, there is no cure. Tremendous scientific advances have significantly extended patient survival rates, and many patients today will never have recurrence of their disease. However, even after successful treatment, there may remain cancerous or precancerous cells in the body. Cancer patients, must maintain a high level of vigilance for the rest of their life, as the risk still remains.

Some types of cancer have cures. Most do not. There is no "cure" for the kind of cancer Kevin has, but we have personally met many people who are long term cancer survivors. Rapid advances in cancer research and treatment are very promising. All we can do is keep on fighting until there is a cure. Cancer is a chronic illness, something you live with and treat.

Does “no evidence of cancer “ mean no cancer ?
Anyone can have undetected cancer, and many people do. A cancer may take, say, 15 years from onset to death, and it will only be detected in years 12 to 15. No evidence of cancer after treatment means that cancer has not been detected. This is the best that can be said. The terms “cured” ,“all clear “ and “in remission” mean that there is currently n o evidence that cancer is present. They certainly do not mean that there is no cancer, or that the patient will be free from cancer for a long time. ...

Endometriosis cysts are sometimes referred to as "beningn tumours", because they may "behave similarly" to cancer, but endometriosis is not the same disease. In very rare cases, endometriotic implants has lead to cancer, but this is very very rare. Some research suggests that some women with endometriosis may be at a slightly higher risk of developing certain cancers but this is still controversial. >> More about endometriosis and cancer

Is this a rare cancer?
In most cases this is not rare. However, Kyra’s is rare for several reasons. First, the way that the tumor manifested itself when she was little was extremely rare. Could it be cancer?
A lump in the breast should always cause some concern, though breast cancer in men is very unusual--Less than 1%, and this is generally in older men. Gynecomastia often occurs on both sides, so if a breast mass occurs on only one side, it may be more suspicious for cancer. It would be extremely unusual to see male breast cancer on both sides at the same time. Sometimes a patient's history may give a clue as to whether or not the lump could be cancer. In other cases, a mammogram or ultrasound may be required. ...

Is cancer contagious?
No. Cancer cannot be passed from one person to another by close proximity or touching. However, some cancers are caused by viruses, which can be transmitted to others. These viruses have the potential to damage DNA and lead to cancer but do not always. Examples include cervical cancer, which is caused by the herpes papilloma virus and certain cancers such as Kaposi sarcoma , found in people who have the AIDS virus. The cancer itself is not contagious but the virus is.
