Why do children get the HIB vaccine?

The HIB vaccine saves lives. HIB (which stands for Haemophilus influenzae type b) causes meningitis, pneumonia, and other serious infections. The vaccine protects children from those diseases. According to CDC, before the HIB vaccine was routinely given to children, there were approximately 20,000 cases of HIB infections every year in the US, and 1,000 children died from HIB infections. Today, there are fewer than 100 cases of

Is Hib vaccine available in Maldives?

As said before the vaccine is not included in the national program. It is however available for purchase from pharmacies. The STO pharmacy and ADK pharmacy sell the vaccine as a prescription only medication. It costs around Mrf 250 per dose.

Who should not get the Hib vaccine?

A very few children may develop significant allergic reaction to the 1st Hib vaccine dose. These children should not be vaccinated with further doses. Hib vaccine should not be given below 6 weeks of age.

What are some of the risks of the HiB vaccine?

In a study of 401 infants, fever occurred in 2%, and redness, warmth,

Can PEDIARIX be given concomitantly with Hib vaccine?

Yes. In clinical trials, PEDIARIX was routinely administered concomitantly, at separate sites, with Hib vaccine. No effect on the safety or immunogenicity profile of either vaccine was observed. [1,2,6] When concomitant administration of Hib vaccine is required, it should be given with a separate syringe and at a different injection site. Does Hib vaccine provide life-long immunity?

Hib conjugate vaccine has been used for more than ten years now. Breakthrough Hib disease has not been reported in older children. Therefore, immunity persists for more than ten years. We will continue to monitor for breakthrough disease in older people

Do children get fever with Hib vaccine?

Some children do get mild to moderate fever following Hib vaccination. If fever develops it can be safely managed with Paracetamol in most cases. It is not recommended that Paracetamol or other fever medications be used as a prophylaxis. Some children may also develop mild redness and pain at the injection site. It usually clears on its own without any treatment. If you need further information please contact your doctor or an immunisation center. Alternatively, you could leave a question on this website.

How well does Hib vaccine work?

Available Hib vaccines have been shown in clinical trials to be between 90-100% effective in preventing proven Hib disease. Use of Hib vaccines has dramatically reduced Hib disease in North America and Europe. Effects have been similar in developing countries.

Is Hib vaccine effective in HIV positive children?

Yes. Hib vaccine prevents Hib disease in HIV-infected children, although not as well as in uninfected children. Children infected with HIV are at high risk of Hib disease and should be vaccinated. Hib vaccination programs have been highly successful in decreasing Hib disease in populations with a high prevalence of HIV infection, as shown in a recent study from Malawi. ^ top Vaccine Formulations:

What formulations are available for Hib vaccine?

Hib vaccines are available by themselves or in combination with other antigens, including diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) or hepatitis B. Combination vaccines are often preferred by providers and parents because their use reduces the number of injections necessary to be protected against all diseases. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations has supported the introduction of a” pentavalent” combination vaccine including DTP, Hepatitis B and Hib in several countries. ...

How long does the HiB vaccine last?

What is CDC doing in response to the shortage of Hib vaccine?

CDC, in consultation with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, is recommending that providers temporarily defer administering the routine Hib vaccine booster dose given at age 12–15 months except to children in specific groups at high risk. CDC will continue to monitor the supply of available Hib vaccines and work closely with the vaccine manufacturers to equitably distribute vaccine to meet immediate needs.

Should persons with cochlear implants receive the Hib vaccine?

Children less than aged 5 years should receive the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine as a routine protection, according to the Childhood Immunization Schedule . Most children born after 1990 received Hib vaccine as infants. For those age 5 years and older, Hib vaccine is not routinely recommended because most older children and adults are already immune to Hib, even if they have not received the Hib vaccine. ...

Does anyone 5 years of age or older need to receive Hib vaccine?

There are few data on the efficacy of Hib vaccine in persons 5 years of age or older. ACIP recommends consideration of Hib vaccination for unvaccinated persons 5 years of age and older with anatomic or functional asplenia, sickle-cell anemia, or HIV infection ( MMWR 1993;42[RR-4]:8; MMWR 1991;40[RR-12]:29). A single dose of any licensed conjugate vaccine is probably sufficient in most cases (using the dose recommended by the manufacturer for a child). ...

What is Hib vaccine and what does it protect against?

Hib is the short form name given to the bacteria Haemophilus influenza type B. Infection by this bacteria causes meningitis (an infection of the brain and its covering layers), epiglottitis (a disease where a swelling at the upper end of the airway causes severe breathing difficulty) and pneumonia.. Both Hib meningitis and Hib epiglottitis were very common in the western countries about 2 decades ago. They were both associated with significant morbidity. ...

How does this impact the nation’s Hib vaccine supply? Are there other Hib vaccine manufacturers?

As a result of this recall, providers who only use Merck Hib vaccines may have none, some or all of their vaccine recalled, and about half of the Hib vaccine in CDC’s stockpile was recalled. There are two U.S. Hib vaccine manufacturers – Merck & Co., Inc. and sanofi pasteur. In the past, each manufacturer has produced about half of the nation’s Hib vaccine supply. Merck has suspended production of its Hib conjugate vaccines and does not expect to resume distribution of these vaccines until the fourth quarter of 2008. ...

If a dose of Hib vaccine was given by mistake to a 2-week-old, should further doses of Hib vaccine be given?

Limited data suggest that Hib vaccine given before 6 weeks of age may induce immunologic tolerance to Hib antigen and reduce the response to subsequent doses. As a result, Hib vaccine should not be given earlier than 6 weeks of age. However, if a dose was administered before 6 weeks of age, it should not be counted as part of the Hib series. A full series of 4 doses (Hibtiter, ActHib, and Omnihib) or 3 doses (PedvaxHib and Comvax) should be started at 6–8 weeks of age as usual. ...

Which Hib vaccine is best suited for use in routine immunization programs?

All available Hib vaccines provide protection against Hib disease. Some Hib vaccines are licensed in the U.S. to be given in two doses, others in three doses. A “booster” dose is given in several countries to children after 12 months of age. Combination vaccine products, where affordable, may be advantageous for the immunization program as they require fewer injections. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization has supported introduction of combination vaccines in several countries. ^ top Implementation:

Can the Hib vaccine actually cause children to get the disease?

Vaccines are made of parts of the Hib capsule—they cannot cause Hib disease. ^ top Epidemiology of Disease:

How many total doses of Hib vaccine are needed for a 12-month old who received one previous dose?

Children who are not up to date with Hib vaccine present a challenge. They usually don't need a full series of 3 or 4 doses of vaccine (depending on the brand used). A 12-month old who received only one previous dose would need one dose of any conjugate Hib vaccine now, and a second dose 2 months later. AAP's 2000 Red Book contains an excellent Hib vaccination table for children who have fallen behind (p. 271). Top

When children less than 24 months of age are infected with Hib, why does the infection not confer immunity but the vaccine does?

When a young child is infected with Hib disease, the child is exposed to the polysaccharide molecules and a young child’s immune system is not mature enough to respond. A child who is vaccinated is exposed to polysaccharide molecules that have been conjugated to a protein. Their immune system responds much better to a conjugated polysaccharide than to a polysaccharide alone. This is a case where the immune response to the vaccine is better than the immune response to the “natural infection.” Pink Book Chapter: Hib

Should we give Hib vaccine to persons with a cochlear implant if they are 5 years of age or older?

Available information does not suggest children or adults aged 5 years or older with cochlear implants need Hib vaccination. There is no specific contraindication to using Hib vaccine in unvaccinated older children and adults, and health care providers may consider its use in cochlear implant recipients. However, there also are no data demonstrating clinical benefit of Hib vaccination for persons with cochlear implants outside the recommended age range. ...

What diseases does Haemophilas Influenzae B (Hib) vaccine prevent and when should my child be vaccinated?

Hib vaccine prevents your child from developing meningitis, pneumonia and bloodstream infections caused by Hib bacteria. Usually, four shots are given: the first at 2 months of age, the second at 4 months, the third at 6 months, and the fourth between 12 - 18 months. One version of the vaccine; however, only requires three shots. Ask your child's pediatrician for more information on the immunization schedule and dosage requirements for Hib vaccine.

My child is due for a Hib vaccine soon, but this recall has me concerned. Is Hib vaccine safe?

It is understandable that this recall might raise concern among some parents. We want to emphasize to parents that this recall was a precautionary step, no problems have been found with the vaccine itself, and the vaccines have not been found to have caused problems in children who received them. Providers have been instructed to stop using recalled vaccine immediately. The Hib vaccine is a safe vaccine. Rarely, serious side effects result from vaccination. ...
