Scurvy: Frequently Asked Questions
Is Scurvy the same thing as Malnutrition?
No! This is actually a very common misunderstanding, but Scurvy is just one of the accompanying diseases of malnutrition (other such micronutrient deficiencies are beriberi or pellagra) and thus is still widespread in areas of the world depending on external food aid. Generally speaking, incidences of Scurvy infection by people living in industrialized nations are very rare and usually due to poor dietary choices.

Are you making fun of people with Scurvy?
Nope! We have simply observed that there are two ways to bring awareness to serious issues: The first way is make everyone sad with horror stories and sad photos of Scurvy symptoms, such as corkscrew hairs and bleeding gums. This is effective in the short term, but the interest generated by these means has proven to wane quickly. The second way is to make people laugh. If people are happy about something, they tend to look forward to talking about it, rather than dread it. ...

Why is International Scurvy Awareness Day on May 2nd?
Back in the 1970's the Sunkist corporation attempted to bring awareness to the plight of Scurvy by launching an ad campaign focusing on the health benefits of eating fruit. Unfortunately, the ad campaign was a complete bust and Sunkist pulled the plug shortly after. As an homage to that early attempt, we have chosen May 2nd for our observance of International Scurvy Awareness Day.

Is there a risk of "rebound scurvy" if high doses of vitamin C supplements are abruptly stopped?
Many investigations have been carried out, both in humans and animals, which demonstrate that the body does not increase its requirement for vitamin C when large doses are taken. So if you take a large amount of vitamin C, and then stop abruptly, you will not be at risk for a vitamin C deficiency.

Your Pirate Quiz/Pirate Pickup Lines are sexist! Where are the good answers for female pirates, ye scurvy dogs?
The Pirate Personality Index is a much-abbreviated version of a longer, more complete and more gender-balanced test that will be available in our book, once we find a publisher. We're all for female pirates, believe us (and if we said otherwise, the Lusty Wench and the Web Wench would kick our butts). A woman can be a cap'n just as well as a man - in fact, the most successful pirate ever was a woman, Ching Yih Saoa, the widow of dread Chinese pirate Ching Yih. ...

I have a Palm OS 5.0 device, but it is 160x160 resolution (LoRes). Can I run Scurvy Dogs 2 on it?
Scurvy Dogs 2 was designed specifically for HiRes devices (320x320) and the graphics are not compatible with LoRes devices (like the Treo 600). However, you can install Scurvy Dogs v1.1 in addition to the latest AppForge Booster and it will work on Palm OS 5.0 devices with LoRes. You cannot use the AppForge Booster installation program that is included with the Scurvy Dogs v1.1 download, because it is compatible with Palm OS 4.0 and below devices. ...

ARRRGH! Methinks ye's nothing but a land-lubber! I wagers ye have never even seen the effects of scurvy with ye own eyes! Tell me, ye gorbellied elf-skinned canker-blossom! What exactly scurvy be?
Well ascorbic acid (the so-called "Vitamin C") is needed to make the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase, which is a precursor to collagen. Collagen is that stuff people inject into their lips to make them look fuller. Anyway, When you don't get enough ascorbic acid, your proline and lysine is underhydroxylized. Thus the collagen in your body has a lower melting temperature. This is bad because collagen is needed to make your teeth, bones, and connective tissue strong. ...
