X-Ray: Frequently Asked Questions
How is an x-ray performed?
The Radiologic Technologist will escort you to a dressing room where you will be given an examination gown if necessary and instructed to remove specific articles of your clothing that might interfere with the x-ray and to ensure the x-ray is free of any artifacts, e.g. clothing, snaps, buttons, clips, etc. You might be asked to stand, sit or possibly lie on the x-ray table depending on the area of interest. The Technologist also uses special equipment, positioning blocks and sponges to achieve an optimal image.

What is an X-ray image?
Part of the X-ray spectrum is absorbed when passing through an object. The more matter the X-rays need to pass through, whether it is thicker or has a higher density, the more X-rays are absorbed and do not pass through the object. The X-rays that manage to pass through the object strike a detector . On the image created on the detector, X-rays appear in different shades of gray according to their intensity. ...

What will an x-ray show?
X-rays can show decay that may not normally be seen directly in the mouth, for example: under a filling, or between teeth. They can show whether you have an infection in the root of your tooth and how severe the infection is. In children an x-ray can show any teeth that haven’t come through yet, and let the dentist see whether there is enough space for the teeth to come through. In adults, it can show any impacted wisdom teeth that may need to be removed, before they cause any problems.

What is an X-ray?
An X-ray uses a high-energy light wave and a photographic plate to take a picture of a body. An X-ray is particularly good at showing bones and some organs (such as the lungs).
Source: www.csmc.edu
An X-ray is a painless diagnostic procedure that uses a low dose of radiation to produce images of the inner anatomy of the body. The patient is positioned to best visualize the area of the body being imaged, and multiple views may be taken. A lead apron may be draped over part of the patient’s body in order to shield it from unnecessary radiation. The test is performed by a state licensed, ARRT (American Registry of Radiological Technologists) certified technologist. ...

Top X-rays are part of high frequency electromagnetic radiation. Because of special properties like penetration through soft parts of body and reactions with photographic emulsion, X-rays are useful in diagnosis of disease from its discovery by William Roentgen in 1897.

An x-ray or radiograph is one of the most commonly used techniques in radiology for imaging internal structures of the body. An x-ray image is produced when a small amount of radiation passes through the body and strikes a sheet of sensitive film. The exposed radiographic film shows body structures in relation to their density. Bone has a high body tissue density so it absorbs more x-rays, resulting in white or nearly clear images on the film. ...

What is X-Ray mode?
Because every object on the map also has an altitude, some static objects may be below ground or even below other static objects. The X-Ray mode on UOAM's Map menu inverts the statics, drawing statics that are
below the ground and other statics instead of drawing only the top-most statics that are at or above ground level.

What is digital X-ray?
Essentially digital X-ray is an advanced technology that allows for improved resolution (better pictures), real time over-read by a radiologist, and the benefit of minimal radiation exposure for our patients. We are in the process of evaluating several different digital systems. Our plan is to convert to a digital system in the next 12 to 24 months. Currently we offer traditional X-rays at our Bergen Park location seven days a week.

What is a panoramic x-ray?
A panoramic x-ray or radiograph shows your full jaw and is the standard of care for oral surgery. If you do not have a current panoramic x-ray, we may recommend that we take one. If your dentist has taken x-rays, they may be adequate, but we may need additional films to properly evaluate you and provide care. In the office, we use a high speed x-ray technique which minimizes exposure to x-rays.

Panoramic x-rays cover the entire mouth, jaw and sinuses on a single film. This type of x-ray is most useful in the detection of many problems including abscesses and impacted teeth, but are not precise enough to detect small cavities in between teeth.

Where was the x-ray taken?
Usually, x-rays are taken at Medical City Dallas Hospital. They may also be taken at a freestanding imaging center.

Is a mammogram an x-ray?
A mammogram is a way to screen for early breast cancer or other breast disorders. The low dose x-rays are essentially confined to the breast. During the exam, the breasts are placed on a shelf-type platform and compressed for a few brief seconds while the x-ray is taken.

Is CT an x-ray?
Yes. A CT scan is made up of a series of x-rays which are processed by a computer to produce cross-sectional pictures of the body. These cross-sectional images allow one to look at the inside of the body just as one would look at the inside of a loaf of bread by slicing it. A CT scan is thus made up of a series of slices.

What is x-ray digitization?
The word digitization comes from the root digit which is a finger or an Arabic numeral. To digitize means to measure or put a number to a special relationship, to measure. When a contractor is measuring out a room to remodel, he or she is digitizing it. X-Ray Digitization then means to very accurately measure the special relationships between the vertebrae, therefore our system can take your patients dynamic studies (flexion-extension films) and graphically measure and demonstrate whether an injury has altered spinal structures due to the trauma.

Is DEXA an x-ray?
A DEXA scan is an x-ray exposure, but minimal (1/20th of a chest x-ray). The technologist occupies an unprotected room and there is no more danger than environmental exposures to radiation.

What is Barium X-Ray and when is it used?
Barium X-Ray or double contrast barium enema (DCBE) is an x-ray examination of the rectum and entire colon performed in a hospital or a clinic. Your doctor or health care professional will give you an enema that contains white dye or barium, followed by an injection of air, to allow the doctor to take x-rays of the lower intestine.

Are x-ray films the property of the patient?
X-ray films are the property of the originating physician, dentist, or radiology group. By law, the patient may access their films and upon request, be furnished a copy. However, original films should never be released. The patient may be charged the cost of reproducing x-ray films.

Is x-ray guidance used?
Yes, most of the procedures performed are done under fluoroscopy, which is low dose x-ray guidance. This makes pain relief more precise and longer lasting. The radiation dose for a procedure is generally less than if you were in the sun for a few hours. X-rays are still not recommended during pregnancy.

How much X-Ray exposure is involved?
Virtual Colonoscopy requires very little X-ray exposure. The usual dose is a fraction of the natural radiation exposure we all receive each year from the sky and other environmental sources. When done every 3-5 years, a Virtual Colonoscopy provides an average X-Ray dose that is less than the additional radiation a person would receive from living at the same altitude as Denver during that same time period
