What is Forensic Anthropology?
Anthropology is the study of humankind, culturally and physically, in all times and places. Forensic Anthropology is the application of anthropological knowledge and techniques in a legal context. This involves detailed knowledge of osteology (skeletal anatomy and biology) to aid in the identification and cause of death of skeletal remains, as well as the recovery of remains using archaeological techniques.

The Anthropology Library is located in the British Museum, opposite the Islamic galleries by the north entrance. The library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 to 16:45 and on Thursday from 12:00 to 19:00. No, you do not need to have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology. Applicants whose previous undergraduate work is in another field may apply and be admitted. You should be clear in your statement of purpose as to why you want to begin graduate studies in Anthropology and be explicit as to how anthropology is reflected in your interests. No you don't. Applicants whose previous undergraduate work is in another field may apply and be admitted. However, previous academic work will be reviewed to see if the student has had the required introductory courses in the four subfields: archaeology, cultural anthropology, physical anthropology and linguistics. If not, these are considered undergraduate deficiencies and can be taken either prior to attendance or during the initial course of study at UHM.

Can I enroll in a graduate medical anthropology course if I am not an anthropology graduate student?
A limited number of seats are available in graduate seminars for non-anthropology students having a background in the health and social sciences. Seminars are set up to facilitate cross-talk between disciplines and draw on trandisciplinary resources. In order to gain entrance into a seminar you must speak to the professor first about your motivations for taking the course and your background. Only in rare exceptions will students be admitted to higher level medical anthropology seminars before taking Anthropology 536A

Are sociology and anthropology one department?
Yes and no. They are one department, but, when filling general education requirements, they do not count as one department. For example, you cannot take a sociology course and an anthropology course and have them count as two courses from one department in the G3 block.

What kind of funding does the Department of Anthropology have?
For first year students, the funding is limited. There is usually one or two Graduate Divison Tuition Waiver/Pacific Asian Scholarships held in reserve for the most promising new student. The department has no fellowships. Minimum requirements for teaching assistantship positions (9) include advanced standing, (second year) in the program. Other possibilities include the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS), East-West Scholarships, as well as Financial Aid Services application.
