There are not a lot of jobs available for archaeologists in colleges and universities. The ones that are available are highly competitive and there are generally more qualified applicants than there are available jobs. Museums positions are also rare and often difficult to obtain. Are they still doing archaeology?

During the earlier phases before the reconstruction could begin, archaeology was done throughout the site and many people who have been here before the reconstruction remember this. The archaeological work that was done in order for the fort to be reconstructed is now complete. There is no further plans for archaeology to be done unless there is going to more reconstruction done or if the ground needs to be surveyed.

What are the Burke Museum Archaeology Collections?

For over a century, the Burke Museum has preserved cultural materials from the Pacific Rim, with an emphasis on the Pacific Northwest Coast of the Americas. Very common question with all ages. I usually start by saying that archaeology is pretty much everywhere you go across the entire world. People generally expect to hear Egypt, Israel, France, Greece, etc. I tell them North Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. This is a good way to address the misguided notion that all archaeologists go to some far-off exotic place to do fieldwork. The recent find of a Fremont site underneath South Temple Street in Salt Lake City shows that sometimes we even do archaeology within modern cities..

How does the Tomb fit in with the archaeology of the area?

We knew from the finds of 1923 when the Priory Crescent was being constructed, and from other finds from 1930, made during the construction of railway sidings, that we were dealing with a Saxon cemetery of quite high status. This was because of the number of "warrior" burials, with sword, spear and shield, and the female burials with gold brooches and beads, and the glassware and imported pottery. It was still totally unexpected to find such a rich "princely" burial on the site. ...
