Computer Science Department: Frequently Asked Questions
How is the workload at the Computer Science department?
The course-load is the standard throughout the country. The first 2 semesters are a bit harsh, and no one really expects you to get research done. But then on, the load lightens up and you will do research. You have to take 8 or 9 courses to get your Master's and 5 or 6 more for the PhD. Usually Master's students leave within 2 years. PhD students typically take about 4 years more to finish the PhD. Most lower-level courses require you to take 2-3 exams per semester. ...

Is there much overlap between the Computer Science department and IS?
Almost none. IS has expertise in existing technology, and detailed knowledge of the computers and software that are commonly used by faculty, staff and students. Computer scientists often know very little about the hardware and software currently on the market, and we are generally not especially competent at setting up new computers or networks, installing software, or maintaining systems. ...

What can snapshots do for me in the Computer Science department?
It's basically a backup of the home directory file systems. Both the faculty/research and CSIF home directories use this technology. In the CSIF it is done on a daily basis. The faculty and research fileserver has hourly backups. These are not done every hour, but on a special schedule designed around the workday. If you delete a file and need it back, check for it in the previous snapshot.

Are all courses offered by the Computer Science Department available online ? (Are online courses easier?)
No (and No). Many courses are offered online to accomodate the diverse schedules and lifestyles of our students. However, some courses are not suitable for online delivery. Our department strives to make online courses equivalent in quality and difficulty to face-to-face classes. And yet, distance learning is not for everyone. It requires a very disciplined and self-motivated student. To see a list of classes offered online each semester, search the [Blackboard/WebCT® (Online) Course List] for the desired semester.

What is the examination procedure (oral / written - time duration) for Master courses at FBI (computer science department) - h_da?
This depends on the course. Most courses end with a 90 minutes written exam. Classes with lab hours might mix the grades, i.e. lab work gets graded as well as an exam and the final grade is a mixture out of these 2 components. Some classes also end with an oral exam - usually issued for groups of 3 students, lasting 45-60 minutes. Project classes are graded on the basis of active group participation, individual ideas and contributions to the overall project and the final 'product' of the project.

I read somewhere that the Computer Science department at Royal Holloway appears in The Da Vinci Code - is this true?
Not quite. It is true that Royal Holloway gets a mention in Dan Brown's book (the heroine did a degree here). However, the book says her degree was with the Information Security Group (ISG), who are based in the department of Mathematics and work on Cryptography and designing secure computer systems. The degree they teach is at a postgraduate level but we are starting an undergraduate course in Secure Computing with the ISG this coming academic year.

Is the PhD program in Computer Science a part of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering?
The Ph.D. program in Computer Science is in the Computer Science Department, not the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. They are two entirely separate programs with different application forms and procedures. If you wish to apply for a Ph.D. program in Computer Science, please use the SCS application form.

I already taught or TA'd while enrolled as an undergraduate or masters student here at Columbia in the Computer Science department. Does that fulfill the doctoral teaching requirement?
Maybe. It depends on whether you were funded as a grader (small stipend) or as a teaching fellow (tuition remission plus slightly larger small stipend). Most undergraduate or MS students called "TAs" are considered by the university to be "graders", and they are funded on the casual payroll rather than as appointed TAs. Their duties are often substantially different than doctoral students fulfilling the teaching requirement. ...
