How do I enroll in the Microbiology Capstone?

To enroll in the Microbiology Capstone, you must find an MBI faculty member willing to sponsor either your laboratory research (MBI 477.C) or your library research (MBI 440.C). Research Capstone courses require a completed independent study form for enrollment. Be sure to use the .C modifier when you enroll in either Research Capstone course and in the Seminar Capstone component (MBI 490.C).

Microbiology – Are the products germicides?

They have not been classified as germicides at the present time. However, there products do not leave any residue or microbes. In addition, since these products do kill germs when applied, there is no need to sanitize your equipment with alcohol. Once cleaned with PharmaKlee products, sanitizing is completely optional.

How soon can I get my microbiology results?

We usually do microscans the same day. A culture plate needs to be incubated anywhere from two to seven days: Saccharomyces yeast colonies and Acetobacter colonies usually appear within two or three days, but Brettanomyces colonies and lactic acid bacteria colonies often take up to a week to appear.

Why does the Microbiology module lack information about Parasites?

The Microbiology module is designed to identify bacteria [yeasts, mycobacteria] based on phenotypic tests. In theory, this could extend to parasites, based on a long list of relatively obscure morphological criteria [aphasmid, nematode, vaginal pore, position of gonads, etc]. This could also be used to identify viruses [ether solubility, isocahedron, etc]. In either instance - much work for a limited user list. Does Gynecor offer microbiology testing on endometrial samples?

We do not currently offer microbiology testing as there is no data describing the reliability of culture results from this method. (The Tao® Brush is provided in a sterile pack. If, after obtaining the endometrial sample, the physician were to retract the sheath and inoculate a tube of sterile broth transport media with the brush and its content sample, then that tube could be submitted for culture and sensitivity.

How are sensitivities ordered when sending a culture to Microbiology?

Sensitivities are automatically done on appropriate cultures unless the box on the Microbiology requisition (new requisition Dec. 2006) is checked that no sensitivities are required. The wording on the Microbiology requisitions has changed.

What is the average time-to-degree for a Microbiology student, and is it comparable to other programs?

Currently about 5-6 years, which is pretty typical in the biosciences. Annual thesis committee meetings provide a way to ensure that you proceed to degree in as timely a fashion as possible. Research is inherently unpredictable, but diligent student and faculty efforts as well as adherence to programmatic guidelines should make achieving a Ph.D. in 5 years a realistic goal.

Do I have to take Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology?

Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology or equivalent courses are prerequisites to the Nursing program. If the course work was not completed at Ohlone check with a counselor to make sure the courses are equivalent to the Ohlone College courses. Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
