What is BSD?

BSD stands for Berkeley Software Distribution. Again there are many flavors of this “Unix” such as FreeBSD OpenBSD and NetBSD.
There are actually more than one BSD operating systems, such as FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, PC-BSD or DesktopBSD. They are also all Free Software. BSD's are much more similar to GNU/Linux than to Windows. GNU/Linux is a "clone" of UNIX while BSD's are almost UNIX — they are the product of an evolutionary process that turned UNIX into a completely free system. BSD stands for "Berkeley Software Distribution", and indeed it all started at the University of California Berkeley.

Are BSD aggressive?

Yes, particularly if they are raised with them. If they are not raised with children, they should be given ample opportunity when young to meet and interact with children. Why a BSD license?

Its a BSD with no advertising clause which is the most lenient/compatible license we could possibly find. There are several reasons for picking this license: Part of the goals is to turn the project into a JSR which would make a GPL rather problematic, an RI can be GPL but its "difficult" and people usually go the dual license approach which starts getting messy. In Linux and BSD?

Is BSD truly free?

This question is somewhat difficult to answer only because each flavor has its own strengths and weaknesses, and user requirements also vary widely. However, I can fairly say that If you need to run on something other than the x86 (Intel PC) architecture, check out NetBSD. It is the oldest and most mature member of the BSD family, which can be run on a wide variety of non-Intel architectures. Why is the original BSD license incompatible with the GPL?

Because it imposes a specific requirement that is not in the GPL; namely, the requirement on advertisements of the program. Section 6 of GPLv2 states: You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein. GPLv3 says something similar in section 10. The advertising clause provides just such a further restriction, and thus is GPL-incompatible. The revised BSD license does not have the advertising clause, which eliminates the problem.

What are Berkeley Sockets (BSD) and how are they used?

BSD is a programmatic interface to call networking (socket) routines from a programming language (designed to be called by 'C' programs). socket routines allow inter-system data transfers. Yes. Your choice of Operating System is indeed in balance with the rest of the universe. There is however some problems with Fle2 and *BSD. They are because of a bug in the BSCW3.2 software, on which Fle2 is built. BSCW3.2 excepts python open().tell() to return 'int', while it in the *BSD world, with FFS, returns a 'long'. Does BSD varients support ipv6?

Nearly all IPv6 functionality for *BSD operating Systems was developed by the KAME project. With time more and more of their code makes it into the platforms FreeBSD (4.0), NetBSD (1.5), OpenBSD (2.7) and MacOS X (10.2). This means, that from the respective versions on, IPv6 will be switched on and available on all those platforms by default. You don't need to do anything.
