Compression: Frequently Asked Questions

What is compression?

Compression is a process where a file is made smaller by reducing the number of bits in the file. The higher the compression, the greater the loss of detail. JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most common format. Compression increases the number of images that can be stored on a flash card.
Compression is a process that reduces the file size by removing redundancies. For us, it is the art and science of creating the highest quality compressed media for each unique application.
Compression is a technical way to reduce the amount of “information” in the TV signal that must be transmitted to offer a high-quality digital signal. Compression makes the U.S. standard of digital television feasible, given spectrum limitations in the U.S. Compression also makes it possible to offer more channels in the same amount of signal.
Compression refers to a special firm dressing or sock that is put on the lower leg to apply pressure to the skin of the leg for a long period of time. The dressing is designed to apply more pressure at the ankle and progressively less pressure to wards the knee. This is called graduated compression.

Is the compression lossless?

Unfortunately no. The compressed footage is of much lower quality than the originally imported footage. As with all video there is a size/quality tradeoff and we made it a goal to store as much video as possible on your hard drive while also having good playback quality.

Is compression available?

Yes. Most of the client APIs support some sort of compression, and some even allow you to specify the threshold at which a value is deemed appropriate for compression during storage.

Is compression supported?

No; standard Java currently does not provide the necessary requirements for this.

Does a run in compression hosiery affect the compression?

It is possible for runs to affect the compression of the garment. This depends on factors such as the severity and location of the run. For example, a single small run confined to the upper thigh or panty area will not affect the compression of the lower leg where the stated ankle pressure is determined. A localized decrease of compression may occur in the area directly under the run. If the run is moderate to severe, improved hemodynamic in the area beneath the run may not occur. ...

Is there a compression utility?

See entry in fluxbox section.

What compression method is used?

Motion-JPEG and JPEG are used in video and still-picture mode, respectively. You can also set the video quality on the camera server settings page. The greater value gives better video quality. However, since picture data will also be larger, higher-quality pictures may lower the frame rate.

What is a compression warning?

Most digital cameras allow for a choice between different levels of quality and are often labeled as Low, Medium or High Quality. This feature refers to the level of compression used in translating the image to a digital file and is often used to alter the number of files that can be stored by the camera. Generally speaking the less compression (High Quality), and therefore the larger the file, the better the prints will be. ...
Some models of digital cameras allow for a choice of a level of Quality. This is an option that is sometimes labeled as Low, Medium or High Quality. This refers to the level of compression of the picture. The simple rule is, the higher the quality (i.e. a lower level of compression), the better the prints will be. We suggest always using the highest quality setting when you want to get digital iPrints made from your pictures. Please keep in mind that once you have compressed an image, there is no coming back. ...

What is "graduated compression"?

It's a new technology designed to enhance natural leg circulation, which helps prevent leg swelling, and fatigue. It provides maximum compression at the ankle, decreasing gradually further up the leg. This helps improve circulation and helps your legs feel revitalized and refreshed. This amazing fit and feel is available in our Ultra® TLC® Support, Ultra® Shapely Perfection®, Ultra® Soft Dimensions® Lacy Hi-Cut Panty, and the Ultra® Soft Dimensions® Control Top Panty, Ultra® Knee-Hi’s and Opaque Microfiber Tights.

What is the compression technology used?

OmniDocs compresses the document using CCIT G4 technology. Paper based documents are digitized and saved in TIFF format.

Are they similar to compression shorts?

By design they are similar, but the function of compression shorts and LDComfort™ riding shorts are different. The reason being when you are riding long distance, you are sitting for long periods of time. Compression shorts are usually worn short term and can restrict proper blood flow. You don’t want anything being restricted when you are riding a motorcycle and that is why our shorts fit with a gentle hug rather than a tight fit.

What is graphics compression?

What is the compression ratio like?

The achievable compression ratio is largely dependent upon the type of data in the database. Our testing indicates compression ratios between 50 and 95%. SQL Backup Manager supports three compression levels. A Compression Analyzer in the Back Up wizard is also available; it samples data so that you can determine the best compression for your requirements.

What are compression modes?

Digital cameras use different compression modes to store images. If you use high or fine or super fine etc. compression modes then the image produced will be much sharper. Pictures taken at a high resolution will also take up more room on the storage card. Therefore if you are using digital cameras with relatively small storage cards then they will soon become full if you are shooting at a high resolution.

What compression algorithm is used?

The images are fully DICOM standard and no compression is used for transfer of digital mammograms to preserve total integrity of the image. Virtual Mammography currently is the first and only company that has fully demonstrated exact duplication of the original image.

What is the compression rate for DataStorePC?

Compression rates vary by file type and data type, but generally, most data files are compressed to a 5-to-1 ratio. Some file types, however, may not be compressed. Your data is compressed and encoded as it is copied from your PC to the Data Center.

What is data compression?

Data compression is a technique to reduce the size of data. There are two ways to compress data: lossless and "lossy. " When using lossless compression, compressed data does not lose any of its original information and can be completely uncompressed. The data-compression rate is low, and the size of data is reduced by half to one-third of its original capacity. This is the standard data compression method used by computers. ...
