What is the Open Directory Project?

The Open Directory Project http://www.dmoz.org, better known as DMOZ, is probably the single most important directory on the Internet. Submissions are accepted free of charge. Sites are considered for inclusion by volunteer editors who review the sites offered for consideration in their very specific categories. The number of different categories is very large, and covers most of the topics found on the Internet as a whole.
The Open Directory is the foundation for SearchWeb. It is the fastest growing human-edited Internet directory in the world, with over 90,000 topics and 12,000 volunteer editors. The Open Directory places editorial control in the hands of people like you, who are passionate about a subject and create the best topical resources available anywhere.

Is this the same as the 'open directory project'?

Yes and no - it is meant to be a 'more open' implementation of the same concept - a directory where anyone can edit entries. There are some critical differences though, in both philosophy and implementation. More details about that are here .

At this time, we do not do automatic updates from the Open Directory Project. A feature is provided to editors allowing them to import new ODP data into a category, and to update to correspond to an ODP category, whenever they decide to. Other Questions

Why not contribute to an existing open source directory project?

There are already a few open source directory projects, most notably OpenLDAP, Red Hat Fedora Directory Server, and Apache Directory. However, Sun felt creating a new project was a better option than contributing to one of these existing projects. Can I submit my affiliate website to DMOZ Open Directory Project?

Generally, yes, but you can not submit your site to DMOZ Open Directory Project if: a) our products are the only products offered at your website; b) you're using a ready-made affiliate shop.

Category X appears to be just an old mirror of an Open Directory Project category. What's the point in that?

When the project was launched, all music related ODP content was imported. Until one of our editors edits a category, ODP links are all we are able to offer in that category. This is a short term issue; as the project grows so will the depth and breadth of content we are able to provide.

Project from Directory creates new project from selected directory. Being renamed to: "Create Project from Directory...""
